What do ISO 14000, health and safety software, and process safety management software have in common?
The answer is Hazardous Material Management. It is no longer acceptable to just document the usage and storage of hazardous materials and waste. ISO 14000, process safety management, and laboratory and hospital standards, to name only a few, require a proactive approach to hazardous material management.
ISO 14001:2015 and its supporting standards such as ISO 14006:2011 focus on environmental systems to achieve this. The other standards in the family focus on specific approaches such as audits, communications, labelling and life cycle analysis, as well as environmental challenges such as climate change.
There is a need for a hazardous materials management system to document who, what, when, where, and why hazardous chemicals were used. Where the MSDS and SDS is insufficient to provide adequate employee safe use and proper disposal training, the MSDS and SDS need to be supplemented with specific-use training.
The Committee Review Module allows a facility or corporation to implement a hazardous material management review and approval system to fit its specific needs. Review committees can be established, approvals can be documented and the SDS can be augmented with Safe Operating Procedures.
